Toulon is known for its sun and its beaches. It’s to quickly ignore its rich historical, natural and cultural heritage! We take you on a discovery of the largest city in the Var…

The harbour, historic and economic heart of Toulon

Bordered by the peninsula of Giens to the east and the peninsula of Saint-Mandrier to the south, the bay of Toulon is at the origin of the development of the city, which welcomed Greek and Roman ships from the Antiquity. Over the centuries, the harbor of Toulon has become a considerable military and economic asset. Today, it is good to travel it by boat, to discover the military arsenal and remarkable fortifications, like the Royal Tower and Fort Balaguier.

The National Maritime Museum, the essential stopover in Toulon!

From models of a few centimeters to imposing figureheads, from navigation instruments to paintings and precious works, the National Maritime Museum of Toulon is an essential stopover, both for neophytes and for experienced amateurs. We particularly appreciate browsing it with the family: we then take the opportunity to participate in one of its workshops, unless you prefer a night visit to discover the jewels of maritime heritage and culture!

Between sky and sea: the Toulonnais mountains

Overlooking the city with their benevolent silhouettes, the Toulonnais mountains offer a remarkable panorama of the Mediterranean. The highest, Mont Caume, culminates at 804 meters above sea level, while Coudon offers a very beautiful view of the Massif des Maures. Between scrubland and umbrella pines, this imposing limestone massif is a pleasant hiking spot, accessible to all. Cycling enthusiasts will also discover some pleasant trails.

The Mont Faron cable car, emblem of Toulon

From the top of its 584 meters, the Faron is undoubtedly the best known of the Toulon mountains. It has an asset to distinguish itself: the cable car, which is one of the emblems of the city of Toulon. Inaugurated in July 1959, it was designed by an individual who dreamed of an original way to connect the sea and the mountains. It then acted as public transport, since it allowed the inhabitants to reach the city. Today, nearly 100,000 visitors take the cable car every year to explore Faron.

Mont Faron zoo, Toulon’s wild life

The Toulon Wildlife Preservation Center is more commonly known as the ” zoo ” of Mont Faron. Inaugurated in May 1969, it was initially dedicated to the training of big cats with a view to creating circus acts. Several of its “residents” have also made a career on the small and on the big screen. From now on, wild animals are mainly dedicated to the reproduction of endangered species. It also hosts many other species: wolves, hyenas, lemurs, raccoons and baboons.

Allied landing memorial, memory of Toulon

The Toulon landing memorial was inaugurated on August 15, 1964, by General DE Gaulle. Commemorating the operations of the Allied landings in Provence in August 1944, it notably includes an American alcove, a room dedicated to Great Britain, a number of Canadian souvenirs, as well as an exhibition dedicated to the French forces. This memorial is also an exceptional spot to enjoy a panorama stretching from the Golden Islands to the Bec de la Ciotat and embracing some of the most beautiful Toulon mountains.

The Cours Lafayette market, a Toulon institution

Gilbert Bécaud is one of the most famous native artists of Toulon. He largely contributed to popularizing the Cours Lafayette market, which is one of the most famous markets in Provence. Because if the city has several other markets, that of Cours Lafayette has risen to the rank of a real institution. In its aisles, it welcomes many exhibitors every day, who unpack textiles, flowers, fruit and vegetables: stalls appreciated by both Toulonnais and tourists.

Le Mourillon: the most beautiful beaches of Toulon

Nestled on the shores of the Mediterranean, the city of Toulon is of course a privileged destination for lovers of sun, idleness and swimming. Labeled “Blue Flag”, the approximately 15 hectares of Mourillon beaches are distinguished by the many landscaped gardens that border them. It is also good to discover some sites while strolling: the Royal Tower, the fishing port, the fort of Saint-Louis, or the cove of Pipady.

The Toulon Opera: jewel of the Second Empire

The Toulon Opera has the distinction of being the largest provincial opera. Welcoming the greatest international artists, it is above all renowned for the quality of its acoustics. This building designed by the architect Léon Feuchère and inaugurated in 1862 is also a very good example of the Napoleon III style. Its two doors and its red and gold interior, decorated with bronzes, stuccos and paintings, have also earned it the status of historical monuments in 1988.

The coastal path: discovering the natural heritage of Toulon

Winter and summer, the coastal path offers the possibility of discovering on foot the richness of the fauna and flora around Toulon. Stretching from the Royal Tower to the cove of Méjean, and passing through the beaches of Mourillon, it offers a great opportunity to explore the coasts, and discover secret coves and cabins nestled in the Mediterranean vegetation. However, some precautions are still necessary, since it is a protected natural area!
