Explore the capital of the Grand Duchy from your hotel in Luxembourg

Very often, the name “Luxembourg” is used to designate both the smallest of the European countries and its main city. In reality, Luxembourg, sometimes called Luxembourg-City, is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a state comprising several other municipalities.

The city is located in the southern part of the country. Highly contrasting, it is as modern as it is picturesque and cosmopolitan. The Kirchberg district is, for example, entirely dedicated to the business world, as well as to culture. Composed of large buildings with varied architectures, it houses the Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte concert hall (or Philharmonie), but also some great museums.

You can, among other things, visit the Mudam (Museum of Modern Art), or the Fortress Museum and the Luxexpo Convention Centre. You can discover this dynamic district from the Hotel ibis Style Luxembourg Center Gare, ideally located 200 m from the station and a 15-minute walk from the city center. Surrounded by medieval fortifications, the old town is really worth a visit, thanks in particular to its geographical location.

Perched on the heights of the city, it dominates the Pétrusse gorges, offering a magnificent panorama. Among the sights to see in Luxembourg City, there is the Chemin de la Corniche. This pedestrian alley dating from the 17th century is located on the ramparts of the city.

From this privileged position, you overlook the old center, in particular the Grund district and its typical houses. Some call this path “the most beautiful balcony in Europe”. ideally located 200 m from the train station and 15 minutes walk from the city center.

Take a nice walk in the heart of the old town, in the Grund district

As beautiful to explore on foot as it is pleasant to go out, the Grund district mixes typical houses, trendy pubs and traditional or gourmet restaurants. Some of its stone houses are built into the rock. Located at the bottom of the Pétrusse valley, this tourist district is crossed by the Alzette river.

Take advantage of your walk to take the 15th century bridge that spans it. You can also admire the ramparts of the old Luxembourg fortress, as well as the terraced gardens and vineyards. This district is easily accessible on foot from the Novotel Luxembourg Centre.

Visit the Grand Ducal Palace

Luxembourg is a monarchy whose head of state is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. If the latter lives most of the time in his country castle, his official residence remains the Grand-Ducal Palace. It is located in the heart of the old town, rue du Marché-aux-Herbes.

If you go to Luxembourg in the summer, you can visit the residential palace during the day. 1Every year on April 16, the birthday of Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, a big party is organized with, among other things, fireworks. If you are staying at the Novotel Luxembourg Center or the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal, you will only be a few minutes walk from this unmissable monument.

Relive history in the casemates

Luxembourg is a city steeped in history, which has experienced sieges and wars. Evidenced by the vast network of tunnels that runs through some parts of the city. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Bock casemates are made up of 23 km of underground galleries dug into the very heart of the Bock rock. In the past, they served as a place of hiding and protection for besieged Luxembourgers.

Today, the casemates are a curiosity to discover during guided tours or not. The casemates of Pétrusse allow you to explore another area of the city. The site also includes the ruins of an old medieval fort, from which you have a breathtaking view of the city. Located just next door, the Pétrusse parks are also very pleasant for taking walks.

Discover the incredible Château de Vianden

If the city of Luxembourg is full of old buildings paying homage to history, the rest of the country also has a vast historical heritage. Located at the crossroads of Europe, between Germany, France and Belgium, Luxembourg has often been the victim of armies of looters.

Passing through the region to go from one territory to another, they took the opportunity to take advantage of the local wealth. It is enough to count the many castles in the country to understand that the Luxembourgers have done everything to repel these attacks.

The landforms of the country are dotted with multiple medieval constructions. If some are now in ruins, there are still dozens that are still standing. VS’ is particularly the case of the Château de Vianden which overlooks the town of the same name on the edge of the German border.

Magnificently restored, it is worth the trip, both for its remarkable architecture and for its exceptional location. From its location, you have an impressive view of the surrounding forests, the 2Rhin and the city walls.

Take part in the dancing procession of Echternach

As long as you are close to the German-Luxembourgish border, head to the Abbey of Echternach, a Benedictine monastery founded in 698. If the visit to the religious building itself proves interesting, it is especially the dancing procession of Echternach which made it famous.

It is also part of the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity drawn up by UNESCO. Every year on Whit Tuesday, the town’s Christians dance through the streets waving white handkerchiefs. If you cannot go to Luxembourg on this specific date, you can still enjoy the show thanks to a short film shown during the visit.

Admire the surrounding countryside from Esch-sur-Sûre

Esch-sur-Sûre is a village located about 50 km northeast of the Luxembourg capital. Overlooking a bend in the neighboring river, the Sûre (or Sauer), the small town boasts a superb medieval style.

This is particularly represented by its 15th century watchtower and the ruins of the old local castle. Built in the heart of nature, the town is surrounded by pastures, forests and waterways. There is even an artificial lake nearby where you can swim, picnic or take beautiful relaxing walks.

Taste Luxembourg gastronomy

Luxembourg cuisine is a real mix of cultures, trends and flavors. According to your desires, you can taste local specialties that are very similar to what you can taste in Alsace, Belgium or Germany. Ardennes ham, Riesling pâté, Luxembourg beer are all dishes and drinks to enjoy as a couple, with friends or family.

You can also find excellent tables if you are a fan of Italian or French gastronomy, seafood, or even vegetarian cuisine. Restaurants, brasseries and bistros welcome you for a meal to delight your taste buds. In Luxembourg, you can even dine in 9 starred restaurants (one or two stars) whose menu has made it famous, such as Ma Langue Sourit, Clairefontaine, La distillerie, Mosconi, La Cristallerie, Guillou Campagne.

The Sofitel Luxembourg Europe has an award-winning gastronomic restaurant: Oro E Argento, which puts Italian dishes in the spotlight.

Where to go out in Luxembourg?

Would you like to experience a Luxembourgish night? In Luxembourg, you will find many bars and nightclubs where you can party. You can also take advantage of the many local cultural events: concerts, theatrical performances, village festivals, festivals, carnival… The Luxembourg calendar is as rich as it is varied!

Take advantage of your getaway to do some shopping

Very dynamic and frequented by visitors from all over the world, Luxembourg is also the ideal place for shopping. You will find in the city a multitude of shops, including major international brands and luxury boutiques.

The Cloche d’Or district has many brands and has a huge contemporary shopping center with nearly 130 stores, a hypermarket and places to eat. If you are addicted to shopping, this is an attraction not to be missed in Luxembourg! If you prefer a more authentic atmosphere, you can go to the Place Guillaume II market every Wednesday and Sunday.

The Glacismaart is also a not-to-be-missed meeting place with its many fresh produce stands, second-hand goods dealers and merchants of all kinds. It takes place every month the third Sunday between March and November, on the large Glacis field, in the Limpertsberg district. If you are a fan of flea markets, the Antiques & Art Fair Luxembourg event, organized each year at Luxexpo over an area of 4500 m², should satisfy you.
